ABOUT SILVER AND CHARCOAL LABRADORS

Silver and Charcoal Labradors are very unique in color.  The coat color is determined when a Silver Factored Labrador is bred with another Silver Factored Labrador thus Silver puppies can be produced in the litter.  Both parents determine what the puppies will turn out like and provides the different colors.

The gene that produces the Silver color is a recessive coloration gene that Chocolate Labs carry.  In order for a lab to exhibit the Silver color it must already possess the recessive traits that a Chocolate has then it must also carry the recessive dilution trait.  When a puppy inherits a recessive (silver) coloration gene from each parent its color will be Silver.  This coloration can occur by breeding: two Chocolate Labs who carry a recessive color gene, breeding two Silver Labs or by breeding a Silver Lab to a Silver Factored Chocolate.  Silver Lab Puppies are born with bright blue eyes that turn gray to a hazel color around 4-6 months of age.

Charcoal Labs are Silver-Factored Yellow Labs and can occur randomly in any Lab/Lab breeding.  Charcoal can also be produced intentionally by breeding a Yellow Lab with a Silver Lab.  If a Charcoal is bred to another Charcoal their litter will contain approximately 1/4 Silvers and 3/4 other colors.  Others can produce 100% Charcoal.  Charcoal Lab Puppies are born with bright blue eyes and they turn to a gray to yellowish hazel color.

Silver and Charcoal Labradors are as pure to the breed as are the more common Black, Chocolate and Yellow Labradors.  At one time the Silvers were registered with the AKC as Silver but due to the fact there wasn’t many, Silvers were combined with the Chocolates and considered within the sedge of that color.

Even though we breed our Labradors for the unique color of the Silvers and Charcoals, are main goal is to produce healthy puppies.  We took alot of time researching pedigrees to ensure that our puppies have a good healthy history accompanied by a good temperament.  The Labrador Retriever has been rated the top dog with both the CKC and the AKC for many years.

They are simply, in our opinion, the best family dog you can have.
